Can you give our small group of volunteers an update on the status of the  New York County Lawyers' building? Is the building sound?

I have been in touch with Lois Davis, who runs the Pro Bono programs at
NYCLA. All staff members of NYCLA are safe and sound. NYCLA is currently using the offices of Craig Lundy, President of NYCLA. There's contact info on the NYCLA website if anyone needs to contact the staff.

Lois said that the building was not damaged and everything is intact. There
is some dust from the explosions but that's about the extent of it. Also,
there was no electricity and phone service. NYCLA is just waiting for
permission to resume operations at the building. I was down in the area a
week ago Friday and the streets west of Broadway were fenced and guarded.

NEWARK, NJ (Friday, October 5, 2001) - Newark, New Jersey publisher of the New York Lawyers Diary and Manual (www.lawdiary.com) and its Internet company, e-Law, LLC (www.e-law.com) assembled a coalition of New York bar and legal associations to share contact information for attorneys displaced by the September 11th tragedy. The organizations joining the legal publisher include the New York State Bar Association, the Association of the Bar of the City of New York, the New York County Lawyers Association, the Network of Bar Leaders, and the New Jersey State Bar Association.

Many of these organizations have been gathering contact information for some of the thousands of lawyers who were forced to move offices on September 11th. It’s not uncommon for these law firms to change their address, phone number, fax number, and email address each week. This creates great difficulty for clients and other attorneys who need to locate these lawyers.

Lawyers Diary and Manual publisher Ed Denné said: “Creating one central clearing house for contact information brings consistency of content and the strength of a shared focus. Leveraging the efforts of many organizations to achieve the goal of providing the latest and most accurate information to those in need, underscores the unity that has become the signature of New York in recent weeks. Lawyers Diary and Manual has been a primary source of information for and about the communities of law and government since 1929. We’re pleased to join ranks with these other fine organizations in taking these necessary steps to recovery.”

Lawyers Diary and Manual built a website (www.lawdiary.com/nyrelief.shtml) that serves two purposes. Attorneys can enter their law firm contact information and the public can view it.

The New York State Bar Association, the Association of the Bar of the City of New York, the New York County Lawyers Association, the Network of Bar Leaders, and the New Jersey State Bar Association expressed interest in working with Lawyers Diary and agreed to direct lawyers and the public to the website. Lawyers and members of the public who do not have Internet access may call 1-800-444-4041, ext. 128 or send an email to wtc@lawdiary.com.
